As of this writing, 25 mobile sportsbooks have applied for an Ohio online sports betting license. One of those 25 is Out The Gate. If you haven’t heard of this company, you’re not alone. Out The Gate is a complete newcomer to the online sports betting industry.
Although details are sparse as there is currently no mobile app or desktop site, we’ll tell you everything we know about Out The Gate Inc’s sports betting app.
What Is The Out The Gate App?
Out The Gate is led by two industry veterans in Christopher Kape (CEO) and Robbie Mannis (CFO) who both previously worked for Don Best Sports before the company was acquired by Scientific Games in 2018. In the past, Scientific Games had partnerships with well-known sportsbooks like BetMGM and FanDuel.
Out The Gate is listed on the Ohio Casino Control Commission’s (OCCC) Sports Gaming License List under both Type-A (mobile betting) and Type-B (retail betting) licenses. In addition to having a mobile sportsbook, Out The Gate’s website also lists the following products:
- Daily fantasy sports
- Casino
- Racing
- Poker
- Virtual games
If the Out The Gate casino app requires money to play, it won’t be available to residents of the Buckeye State as online casinos were not part of the state’s sports betting bill.
The daily fantasy app, if approved, could come to the state as Ohio has legalized DFS apps since 2017.
Interestingly, Out The Gate’s website doesn’t feature any type of screenshots or mockups of what the app might potentially look like. If Out The Gate is approved by the OCCC, almost everyone will be seeing it for the first time once it hits the public’s eye.
Out The Gate’s Interesting Ohio Partner
As mentioned above, Out The Gate is listed as the management services provider for a Type-B license. Type-B licenses are reserved for in-person, retail sportsbooks. While other sportsbooks are partnering with professional sports teams and casinos, Out The Gate took an incredibly unique approach.
The sports betting app newcomer has partnered with SPIRE Institute. What is SPIRE Institute, you ask? From its website, SPIRE is “An international, high school and post-graduate sports performance training and education academy, located within a world-class event and wellness complex.” Yes, you read that right: A high school.
The complex totals more than 750,000 square feet and features training programs for elite youth athletes, professional athletes, and even Olympians.
Since the OCCC has yet to determine SPIRE’s fate, there aren’t many details surrounding what a potential SPIRE retail sportsbook would look like. An advisor to the institute has said that any gaming operations will be located off campus.
Ohio’s sports betting law allows for a maximum of 25 online sportsbooks and 40 retail sportsbooks. When it comes to retail licenses, HB 29 awards retail licenses based on a county’s population. SPIRE Institute is located in Ashtabula County, which based on its population would be awarded one license. At the time of this writing, SPIRE Institute is the only applicant in Ashtabula County.
