Ohio State Tops Akron 72-63 in Overtime to Advance to the Sweet 16 in the NIT

The Buckeyes are moving on in the NIT, as Tuesday night in Columbus at Value City Arena they took care of business, topping the Akron Zips 72-63 in overtime.

The win puts Ohio State to the round of 16 in Region 4, as they look to win their third NIT Championship, first since 2008.

Three Buckeyes had three players each chip in 18 points, junior Marc Loving, Sophomore guard Kam Williams, and freshman guard JaQuan Lyle.

Akron junior center Isaiah Johnson led the Zips with 16 points in the loss. Senior forward Reggie McAdams added 12 in the defeat.

The Zips led at the half 29-25, while the Buckeyes outscored them by four in the second half to send the game to overtime, where in OT they dominated Akron 10-1 for the 9-point win.

Ohio State shot 34.3% from the field on the night, while the Zips shot 32.9%.

Ohio State moves to an all-time record of 55-13 against MAC opponents, it was the first meeting between the two teams since 1989. Akron finishes the season with a mark of 26-9.

The Buckeyes will play the winner of #2 Florida vs #7 North Florida on Thursday night.
