COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State Department of Athletics will finish in third place in the 2022-23 LEARFIELD Director’s Cup Standings on the strength of 1,210.75 total points scored in this national competition that honors institutions maintaining a broad-based program and achieving success in its NCAA sports programs.
This year’s finish represents the ninth time Ohio State has finished as the No. 1 athletics program in the Big Ten Conference with eight of the top finishes occurring under the direction of Senior Vice President and Wolfe Foundation Endowed Athletics Director Gene Smith. Ohio State’s No. 1 rankings within the Big Ten have occurred in 2003-06-10-11-12-15-16-17-23. Smith’s first year at Ohio State was in 2005-06. The Director’s Cup Standings were initiated in 1993-94.
Ohio State had 23 sports programs compete at their respective NCAA championships this past year and 11 finished in the Top 10. Only 19 teams can total points toward the Director’s Cup.
Ohio State’s 12 women’s teams that made an NCAA field included hockey (2nd), volleyball (5th), basketball (5th), swimming and diving (6th), gymnastics (9th), tennis (9th), rowing (12th), cross country (15th), soccer (17th), golf (31st) and indoor (18th) and outdoor (31st) track and field.
The 10 men’s NCAA (and CFP) teams from Ohio State were tennis (2nd), football (4th), wrestling (4th), volleyball (5th), gymnastics (9th), swimming and diving (11th), golf (15th), soccer (17th) and outdoor (37th) and indoor (41st) track and field.
In addition, the co-ed fencing team was fifth at the NCAA championships.
With one championship left, baseball, Stanford has clinched the 2022-23 LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup. While baseball still needs to finish, Stanford University has advanced to the Baseball College World Series, and there are not enough points remaining for the University of Texas to catch the Cardinal, who have 1,339.00 total points to Texas’ 1,306.50 points. USC is fourth with 1,073.00 points and Georgia is fifth with 1,072.50 points.
