CHURCHILL DOWNS , Kentucky – Nyquist has won the 142nd Kentucky Derby in front of more than 167,000 at Churchill Downs. Driven by jockey Mario Gutierrez, trained Doug O’Neill and owneed by Paul Reddam, the horse came in as a 2-1 favorite.
Nyquist took down 19 other horses on his path to victory in the biggest field of the year. His finishing time was 2:01.31. Although he needed to come from behind to win it as he was forced to track early leader Danzing Candy for the first half-mile, then following Gun Runner out of the final turn before putting on a the jets to outrun the rest of the field for the big victory!
Exaggerator placed second after furious finish helped to close the gap but he couldn’t pull it off. Gun Runner came in third.
Nyquist entered the race at 2-1 odds, with Exaggerator (5-1), Gun Runner (10-1), Mor Spirit (12-1), and Mohaymen (11-1) the closest behind him odds wise.
Next up in his quest to win the Triple Crowns of Horse Racing will be The Preakness on May 21.
