Undefeated Mount Union has already clinched the OAC and a NCAA DIII playoff birth, and continues to hold the #1 ranking in the nation. Marietta, whose only losses on the season have been against #8 John Carroll and #25 Baldwin Wallace, is having its best season in decades. The Pioneers will have their shot to show their improvement against the mighty Purple Raiders at Mount Union Stadium, the oldest stadium in the state of Ohio.
Mount Union’s offense averages 54.4 points a game, ranked second in the nation, and the defense gives up only 9.9 points a game, good for ninth in the nation. With a win, Mount Union will not only host in Round 1 of the NCAA DII playoffs, but will continue hosting as the top seed until reaching the neutral field of the national title game, the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl, which will take place in Texas this year.
Interesting, Canton will host the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl in both 2020 and 2021 at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. If Mount Union continues its dominance couple of years from now, they will have a much shorter commute to win a national title.
