Northeast Ohio Baseball Players to Watch: Divisions II, III, and IV

Division III

Player of the Year & Pitcher of the Year Selection:

Andrew Abrahamowicz, Elyria Catholic, RHP, Senior

The 6-foot-4 right-hander ranks 13th among all Ohio seniors and third among right-handed pitchers in his class.

In 2016, Abrhamowicz went 8-1 with a 0.88 ERA, striking out 63 batters over 56 innings.

He was voted First Team All-Ohio Division III as a junior and will be playing college ball at Nebraska.

Co-Position Player of the Year Selection:

Collin Hohman, Trinity, Catcher, Senior

The right-handed hitting catcher ranks eighth among all seniors at his position in Ohio.

As a junior, Hohman hit for a .474 average, with one homer, nine doubles, three triples and 30 RBI.

He scored 34 runs and stole 12 bases.

Hohman was voted Second Team All-Ohio Division III as a junior and  is committed to play college ball at Northern Kentucky.

First Team

Abrahamowicz, Hohman (see above)

Leighton Banjoff, Elyria Catholic, OF, Sophomore

As a freshman, Banjoff hit .429 with 29 RBI and 12 stolen bases.

He’s already turning heads with his play in the outfield and figures to be in this conversation for the next few seasons to come.

Dalton Earich, Akron Manchester, RHP, Senior

The 6-foot-2 right handed pitcher ranks 62nd among seniors in the state of Ohio and 20th among RHP.

He went 7-1 in 2016 with a 1.35 ERA, striking out 47 batters over 56.2 innings.

Earich is committed to play college ball at Youngstown State.

Manny Garza, Rittman, RHP, Senior

The 6-foot right hander ranks 38th among Ohio senior RHP’s. 

Garza throws an 89 MPH fastball to go with a curveball and changeup.

In 2016, he tossed seven complete games, owning a 0.65 ERA over 53.2 innings.

At the plate, he hit .424 with seven doubles, two triples and 22 RBI, scoring 25 runs.

Garza was voted First Team All-Ohio Division III in 2016.

Second Team

Mike Zeuli, Kirtland, Catcher, Junior

As a sophomore, Zeuli hit .515 with three doubles, 16 RBI, 20 runs scored and 16 stolen bases.

Zeuli is also a wide receiver/defensive back for Kirtland’s football team.

Palmer Capretta, Kirtland, IF, Senior

The shortstop put together an impressive 2016 season, collecting 35 hits, batting .507 with 16 RBI, six doubles, 24 runs, and 25 stolen bases.

Capretta was voted Second Team All-Ohio Division III as a junior.

Quinton Heck, Canton Central Catholic, IF, Senior

Heck ranks 11th among senior second basemen in the state of Ohio.

The right handed hitting infielder is committed to attend The United States Merchant Marines Academy.

Heck serves as one of Canton Central Catholic’s senior leaders on a team which graduated eight seniors in 2016 and begins the 2017 season with first-year head coach Dan Massarelli, who fills the shoes of 35-year manager Doug Miller (700+ career wins).

Kevin McSweeney, Trinity, OF, Junior

McSweeney received Honorable Mention Division III honors as a sophomore, after hitting .456 with ten doubles, 29 RBI and seven runs scored in 2016.

He is one of Trinity’s team leaders and one of six returning starters from last year’s squad, which went 19-6-1 on the season.

Evan Faxon, Hawken, LHP, Senior

As a junior, the lefty went 7-1 with a 1.84 ERA, striking out 48 batters over 53.1 innings.

Faxon is a three-sport athlete, who plays basketball and football along with baseball.

Hawken won 20 games in 2016 and looks to build off of that impressive season, playing in a competitive Chagrin Valley Conference.
