When the Cleveland Cavaliers traded away All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving to the Boston Celtics, all of the talk surrounded the new addition for Boston and how Irving would fit in with fellow All-Star Gordon Hayward and the young group of players the Celtics feature around the two.
None of the spotlight was on Isaiah Thomas.
Thomas, who Boston shipped to the Cavs along with Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, the Brooklyn Nets 2018 first-round pick and the Miami Heat’s 2020 second-round pick, was only brought up when it came to the concern of his hip injury. Thomas was mostly an afterthought in the trade, being viewed as a risk more than a reward in the deal.
Thomas assured the Cavs that he would be back stronger than ever, telling them that he was not damaged as the trade was at a brief halt last week following a physical in Cleveland the week prior.
During the waning hours of Tuesday night, Thomas released a video on Instagram with audio clips of naysayers talking about how he will never be the same. There’s also a particular audio soundbyte of Thomas being informed that he was traded. The most powerful part of the minute-long video clip is when Thomas is shooting around in an empty gym with pictures of him hanging up all around the walls, along with a sign that reads “Pick Me Last Again” (for those who didn’t know, Thomas was the last pick in the 2011 NBA Draft).
The clip ends with Thomas walking away after one final jumpshot, wearing his new Cavs gear while walking past the picture of him in a Boston jersey.
