Preseason game number two for the Cleveland Browns is in the books. This game was all about how the Browns starters on both sides of the ball would look and for both teams to come out of this game healthy.
The Browns defense was the first on the field and played very well. New Browns defensive end Za’Darius Smith forced a holding penalty on Washington in the endzone that called for a safety. Watching the game, I could tell a difference in how much wider the defensive linemen were lined up, compared to years passed.
New Cleveland defensive linemen Maurice Hurst made an impact as well with a sack and Browns linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah was flying around and looked like he did early in his rookie season.
On offense Cleveland starting quarterback Deshaun Watson looked good. In his one and only drive with the starting offense, minus Nick Chubb, he lined up in different sets. From a shotgun to a pistol formation. His passes looked good, and he also rushed three times for 20 yards.
One thing to mention, there was also no Joel Bitonio a left guard, Amari Cooper at wide receiver either.
Overall, the first team defense looked good. I’m very interested to see how good the pass rush looks when the regular season gets here with Myles Garrett and Smith playing at the same time.
On offense, if Cleveland can keep their penalties down, this offense can be very dangerous. Watson looked much better in the one drive, and it looks like, so far, that all the work he put in during the off-season is paying off.
Cleveland will now have joint practices with the Philadelphia Eagles and play preseason game number 3 in Philadelphia on Thursday night. I don’t expect to see any starters.
