Truly so much on my sports gourd I need to share some of these items with you.
Why is there always an undeserved whipping boy, scapegoat in Cleveland Sports. Tim Couch, Kevin Love, Brian Hoyer, Derek Anderson, Grady Sizemore, Myles Straw and now Kyle McCord plus others all seem to get beaten down for bogus reasons. Let’s look at these examples:
* All Tim Couch did was get the beejeebers beaten out of him with no running game, a WR (Kevin Johnson) who would drop before the first down instead of getting hit and more lackluster play. What would Tim do? Get destroyed, jump up clapping and lead his troops back into the huddle! He gets concussed and people are cheering so naturally in the locker room after the game he lets go a barrage of expletives deleted for those classy fans who qualify as rabble. Thanks, Tim, for the service Tim. He was ruined by his team.
* Kevin Love helped bring a World Championship to this great city. Prolly “what have you done for me lately” as things turned quickly on him. Did he bring some of it on? Yes, but not to the degree of how he was treated and guess what, he was a nice piece in the Heats Eastern and Finals run. At times I feel people are jealous of cool dudes, especially their women. You’re gold in my book Kevin.
* The pride if St. Ignatius HS Brian Hoyer only had the Browns at 7-4 in 2014. Was he an ALL PRO? Nope but a winning QB. Some things stand out – Haslam lap dog Ray Farmer, on orders from his master, texting the coaches telling them to put Manziel in! THIS HAPPENED DURING THE GAMES! Also, after a nice victory on a rainy Thursday in Cincy when Brian and Kyle Shanahan were walking out of Paul Brown stadium, Farmer had the nerve to walk up to them, ignore Brian, congratulate Kyle, and say, “now you have 10 days to get Johnny ready!” Yup Johnny donkey as I fondly call him went 0-5!
* All Derek Anderson did was install pride and win in THE LAND! After a horrific start to the ’07 season vs the Steelers, Charlie Frye was sent packing and DA was the starter. All the Browns needed to do was win the last game in Cincy and for some unknown reason OC Chudzinski had Derek throwing into a ferocious win. The next year DA went down with a broken leg and fans cheered. I asked some why and they noted “he sucks.”: Yup rabble again! These are folks not worthy of being fans.
* There is no doubt the detractors of Grady Sizemore were jealous of “Grady’s Ladies” and there women moaned his name in the throes of passion! What did Grady do? Only cut his career short for playing his “keester off” for this team. Not much more to say here.
* Does the bat of Myles Straw need to improve? CERTAINLY, and did he seem to come up to bat in high stakes times and fail last year? Yeah, but my golly his bat was better than the stick of Arias who was cheered and for most of the year he outhit Gimenez (and yes, I am a fan of Andres) but he was always the bad guy. His play in CF saves runs many games and get this, I am all for the team getting a new CF and RF but sheesh to lay fault on him which many do for the Guards failures last year is imbecilic!
* Last up is starting OSU QB Kyle McCord. Yes, he drove the Buckeyes down the field convert a 4th down and 3rd downs (one of them a LONG 3rd down) vs Notre Dame and yes, he righted the ship vs Penn State for another signature win. Now was his pick in the end zone vs Bucky Badger bad? SURE, WAS but my gosh to hear people say, “I’m tired of him” shows me they are “knowledge free”! Yup his play echoes that of CJ Stroud in his first year as a starter! Wait a second? You mean this is Kyle’s first year as a starter?
One more for now! I was watching the NFL Red Zone Sunday and said to my son “dang the NFL is a bad product!’ Heck with the “SHIELD”, I would rather watch HS and College Football any day, including D3. Now as the day wore on, I saw a few things that changed my mind!
– The JETS seeming impossible and improbable W over the Giants! The JETS who had substandard QB play from ZACH WILSON just about the entire game got 2 killa throws and a FG on the final play of regulation then won on a FG in OT to beat the Giants. Yes, I was scorned but no doubt this is Brian Daboll’s team’s MO. Yup Brian had his glory last year.
– How about the Titans rookie WILL LEVIS? 4 TD’s, 238 yards, no picks and a130+ rating. SO COOL and especially sweet were the Oilers jerseys the Titans wore for the game. Dang those were some battles vs Jerry Glanville’s boys. Warren Moon and his “run and shoot” plus playing in the Astrodome with the blue pom poms, Crazy George running out to get the kicking tee, that freaking song “Houston Oilers Houston Oilers” plus Glanville in his duster disparaging Browns fans and the Stadium made the rivalry great!
– It may have been painful to so many reading this but for a fan of the game how about Geno Smith effortlessly driving his team downfield against the self-proclaimed “World’s greatest defense” on Sunday? Some apologists have said “he had a short field,” and the reply should be “a great D stops him.”
– Also, the dead and buried Denver Broncos handled their bidness vs the Chiefs! Yeah, it turns out Mahomes was sick with the flu and his 2 picks were out of character, but Denver did what they had to do. That W kept them from cleaning house even more!
Am I still a fan of HS and College Football more than the NFL? YUP but the examples above made it a fun Sunday.
As always take care of yourself and others, now more than ever it’s your world, pay attention. Enjoy every sandwich and for now ADIOS AMIGO, long may you run.
