Truly it is a beautiful, brisk winter day on the North Coast of America and yes it inspires me to lay down some written prose. Time for “a little bit of this and a little bit of that”!
* So many fun teams to rally around these days. The Cavaliers are the best in the NBA and the Buckeyes are going to the National Championship game in D1 College Football. Great CSU Hoops (check them out) and action on the HS hardwood too. Indeed, the Cleveland Crunch are back to defend their MLIS crown and look more than up to the task.
– Interesting to be penning this after a stinker by the Cavs. Yeah, the boys got their hats handed to them by the Pacers and I should not need to remind Kenny Atkinson that the first 6 minutes of the third quarter are more often than not the MOST IMPORTANT MINUTES IN A BASKETBALL GAME! During this time Sunday night at Rocket Mortgage Field House the good guys were outscored 18-7. They still led by 2 so there was time to right the ship but it did not happen. This team is 33-5 and has really delivered without the “ME ME” talk and how great they are at this point of the season. I still feel they need a viable back up “big” (Valanciunas?)! With all that said, this team SHOULD BE THE TALK OF THE TOWN!
– How ’bout those Ohio State Buckeyes.as the #1 Buckeye homer, honk and shill I understand that the Buckeye rednecks are having a field day but just a reminder…you had this team dead and buried and the coach sent packing. As far as Ryan Day is concerned, I will fess up, that reluctantly I felt it was time also to part ways with him after his 4th consecutive defeat in a row to ttun. Irrational? It certainly did but 3 in a row was enough to send Woody out the door then I felt it was Ryan’s time too UNTIL THIS HIT ME…who would my Alma Mater replace him with? Not Urban as I cannot get the visual out of my head of him fondling a young girl’s backside and truly do not need him to be the face of the Buckeyes again. Who else? I would have called Nick Saban but pretty sure a “NO” was coming (Similar to Cowher in the NFL) as he does not need the HC hassles any longer especially with an out-of-control portal and NIL. Vrabel (he needed to stay in the NFL) and perhaps Fickell but after that there was no one making me smile. I did note that we needed to see what happens in the playoffs and we are seeing it!
This game also featured a legendary play that will live in OSU football lore for eternity. Thank you, Captain Jack Sawyer.
Also PLEASE do not be stupid and ask “if OSU wins the national championship will it be tainted by the loss to the u of m! SAY WHAT?
– I have noted for quite a while that on a cold winter’s night there is nothing like the ball bouncing and sneakers squeaking on the hard wood in a high school gym. From the bandboxes like Sullivan gym at St. Ignatius to the grandeur of the BeeHive at Brecksville Broadview Hts HS and so many other venues make sure you get to a HS Hoops game AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
– I mentioned the Cleveland Crunch and this juggernaut of an Indoor Soccer team has wasted no time in ramping things up after 2 great Ws to start the season. 16-1 and 24-2 were the scores and this team features the firepower to rival the powerhouse teams of the 90’s! I am putting undue pressure on the current lads, but they rival the names Marinaro, Karic, Orf, Schmetzer, Schwitzer, Tanner, Thomas and more. The 2025 heroes go by names of Suljevic, Derezic, Musa, Jordan and so many more. I need to remind you that the MLIS and Women’s Indoor League will have their semi-finals and finals the weekend of April 11-13 at the Wolstein Center which will be magical!
OK, I’ve been avoiding talking about the pro football team for good reason! Some of my dearest friends still do Sports Talk in this city and sadly I cannot listen to them. In the past 3 years except for play by play I have not listened to a combined 15 minutes of Sports Talk in this city. WHY? In a few moments of weakness over this time period here is what I have heard: “Tito Francona does not impress me”, and that came from a host! That is just the tip of the iceberg. Last Saturday I said to myself “The Cavs have just beaten the Thunder and followed that up with a W against the Raptors plus OSU beat Texas and the Buckeyes are headed to the National Championship game” so begrudgingly I flipped over to sports talk and the first two words I heard were “Cleveland browns.” BOOM! I was done and will be again for an extended period of time. HAVE MERCY! What the heck is going on here? A pandemic that rivals the ones we have seen lately (thankfully without the deaths) has to be the Haslam’s team. It has an unfathomable grip on so many people there is a palpable sick side effect that cannot be explained. Now browns fans are mocking the Steelers for losing to the Ravens? Do you enjoy 3-14? COME ON!
Something else to toss in is why can’t I get a response from fans of this team when I ask, “what made you predict 11-6 and a deep playoff run”? How can one say things like that? I let myself down predicting 6-11 at best with tangible reasons. QB play, Predator Karma, a D full of themselves, Awful CB;s after Ward, bad ownership that trickles down and a front office that orchestrated the worst trade in sports history plus truly cannot evaluate talent. I also cannot get a response to those who told me “if the starting QB goes down, they will be ok because DTR is a stud.” Perhaps they meant DUD! My day is too good to continue here but please, come to your senses.
