DES MOINES, IA – For the second consecutive night, Cleveland’s Lake Erie Monsters defeated the Iowa Wild by a 3-2 final score on Sunday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, IA.
With the win, the Monsters improved to 6-2-0-2 overall this season and with 14 points and a .700 points percentage, currently occupy 2nd place alone in the AHL’s Central Division standings.
Iowa leapt to a 2-0 lead early in the first period on Sunday as an even-strength Zach Palmquist goal at 1:39 was followed by a Kellan Lain score less than five minutes later. The Monsters responded late in the period as Andrew Bodnarchuk wired an unassisted transition wrister past Wild net-minder Jeremy Smith at 18:47 to make it 2-1 heading into the middle frame.
In the second, the Monsters took advantage of back-to-back scores, from Trent Vogelhuber at 7:13, assisted by Bodnarchuk, and Josh Anderson at 17:07, thanks to a nifty setup by Vogelhuber and Bodnarchuk, to claim a 3-2 lead that, after a scoreless third period, delivered Lake Erie their final margin of victory.
A 14-save performance from Lake Erie goaltender Anton Forsberg lifted the Monsters to victory while Smith made 17 saves in his league-leading sixth defeat this season.
Next up for the Monsters, it’s the finale of a four-game road trip on Wednesday morning vs. the Milwaukee Admirals with full coverage underway at 11:30 am from the BMO Harris Bradley Center
