It was the last day of the road trip on Wednesday, as the Monsters looked to end their five-game losing streak. They traveled up to Grand Rapids to take on the Griffins.
Cleveland started off on the wrong note, as Anthony Mantha scored a goal for the Griffins at the 4:21 mark of the period. After that, Cleveland fired back for three goals in a row. Jordan Maletta scored at the 4:41 mark, followed by Aaron Palushaj putting the puck between the pipes at the 9:35 mark. For the third goal of the period and first goal of his professional career, Jacob Graves scored at the 16:21 mark of the period. Grand Rapids would not go into intermission quietly, as Martin Frk scored a goal at the 17:03 mark of the period.
After a very defensive second period, the Griffins struck for two goals in the beginning stages of the third period. Martin Frk tied the game up at the 3:02 mark of the period on a power play. Then forty two seconds later, Matt Lorito scored the go-ahead goal.
The Monsters battled back and tied it up with an unassisted Oliver Bjorkstrand goal at the 6:32 mark of the period. The game would stay tied at head to overtime.
In overtime, nobody would be able to finish the game as both goaltenders proved to be strong. The game would head to a shootout, where the Griffins would ultimately prevail 2-1. The Griffins got the 5-4 shootout win, and the Monsters dropped to 3-7-0-1 on the season.
The team plays again Friday against the Chicago Wolves back at home, so come enjoy some Monsters hockey at The Q.
