CLEVELAND– The Lake Erie Monsters looked to finish off their regular season with a win, as they faced the Charlotte Checkers for the second time in two nights. As the starters got some well-deserved rest, the reinforcements were ready to go out and get the victory to carry the team’s momentum into the playoffs.
Brock McGinn started the scoring for the Checkers at the 8:01 mark, as the crowd was quiet for the most of the first period. As the crowd tried to get back into it, McGinn struck again at the 10:25 mark to push Charlotte’s lead to 2-0. That would be the final time that Charlotte would score in this game.
Alex Broadhurst tried to get the momentum back onto the Monsters’ side, as he started the scoring for the Monsters at the 15:40 mark in the First Period. After the intermission, the two teams battled up and down the ice. The Monsters were able to tie it up at two apiece after a goal by Mark Cundari at the 11:41 mark. The Second Period ultimately went to the Monsters, as The Q was loud for the rest of the night.
After the intermission, the Monsters were still fired up after they fought all the way back to tie the game up. Oliver Bjorkstrand’s goal at the 4:16 mark in the Third Period sent the crowd into a frenzy, as they saw their home-town team take the lead for the first time in the game. Sonny Milano’s (12:24 mark in the 3rd Period) and Nick Moutrey’s (16:32 mark in the 3rd Period) goals finished off a 5-2 win over the Charlotte Checkers.
After the game, the Monsters’ Head Coach Jared Bednar spoke about the win and the upcoming Playoff push.
The Monsters finished the regular season with a record of 43-22-6-5. The chase for the Calder Cup starts now!
