Northeast Ohio High School fans remember the names of such standouts as Mitchell Trubisky and Kareem Hunt, and will for many years to come!
The chances Hunt starts at running back for the Kansas City Chiefs against the Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots on September 7 are really good. The former Willoughby South Rebel and Toledo Rocket entered the Chiefs third preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks as the second string running back.
First string running back Spencer Ware suffered a PCL injury in his right knee in the first quarter. Ware could miss anywhere from two weeks to the entire 2017 season. Following the injury, Hunt averaged 4.3 yards a carry against the Seahawks “Legion of Boom” defense. Hunt had nine carries for 39 yards. The Chiefs have some veteran depth at the running back position with Charcandrick West and C.J. Spiller behind Hunt on the depth chart.
Trubisky didn’t start but saw time with the Chicago Bears first team offense on Sunday afternoon against the Tennessee Titans in their third preseason game. Trubisky has outperformed veterans Mike Glennon and Mark Sanchez this preseason.
The number two overall pick out of North Carolina should also see time in the final preseason game Thursday night against the Browns. This preseason, the former Mentor Cardinal is a combined 34 of 48 for 354 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions.
Trubisky shined in the Bears preseason opener against the Denver Broncos. Trubisky completed his first ten passes highlighted by a touchdown pass to Victor Cruz. His touchdown pass to Benny Cunningham in the second preseason game secured the Bears 24-23 win over the Arizona Cardinals. Sunday, Trubisky was 10 of 15 for 128 yards and a touchdown.
No formal decisions have been made for either Hunt or Trubisky at this point. The chances are certainly increasing that the former standouts in Lake County could see their NFL dreams come true in the very near future.
