In a move that is surprising based on the timing, the Green Bay Packers have fired head coach Mike McCarthy, this after losing Sunday afternoon 20-17 at home to the Arizona Cardinals.
The loss dropped Green Bay to 4-7-1 on the season. McCarthy was the third longest tenured head coach in the NFL behind Bill Belichick of the Patriots and Marvin Lewis of the Bengals.
McCarthy has a career record of 125-77-2 and led Green Bay to a victory in Super Bowl XLV in a win in Dallas over the Steelers, along with three other NFC Championship appearances.
“The 2018 season has not lived up to the expectations and standards of the Green Bay Packers. As a result, I made the difficult decision to relieve Mike McCarthy of his role as head coach, effective immediately,” Packers president Mark Murphy said in a statement.
“Mike has been a terrific head coach and leader of the Packers for 13 seasons, during which time we experienced a great deal of success on and off the field. We want to thank Mike, his wife, Jessica, and the rest of the McCarthy family for all that they have done for the Packers and the Green Bay and Wisconsin communities. We will immediately begin the process of selecting the next head coach of the Green Bay Packers.”
Now that McCarthy is a free agent many are wondering if McCarthy will end up in Cleveland as the coach of the Browns starting in the 2019 season.
The Cleveland Browns already employ former Packers Elliot Wolf and John Dorsey, both of who were in the Packers organization during the McCarthy era, so he would be a natural fit to some.
What say you Browns fans, would you like to see McCarthy as the new head of coach of the Cleveland Browns?
