Austintown- The Mentor Girls Track and Field Team won the OHSAA Austintown Division I Regional Championship on May 26.
“Winning the regional title today was so amazing,” said Savannah Dennison. “It’s only been done twice in the history of Mentor. I’m just so proud to be on this team, and everything we accomplished today was amazing.”
In addition to winning the team title, the Mentor Girls Track and Field Team won multiple individual and relay titles during the regional championship.
Individual titles were won by the 4x800m relay team (Kylie Beucler, Annie Berrow, Savannah Dennison, Ada Sabo), and the 4x400m relay team (Annie Berrow, Kylie Beucler, Nora Kraska, Makenzie Stuckert). Also, Savannah Dennison won the 1600m.
In addition to qualifying for states as part of the 4x400m relay team, Makenzie Stuckert also qualified for states in the 100m, and the 400m.
“This means the world,” said Stuckert. “I know how hard my freshman year team worked for that win. We have less seniors this year. It’s crazy to think that we could do this with such a small team.”
Also, Savannah Dennison and Kylie Beucler qualified for states in the 800m and Ada Sabo qualified for states in the 1600m.
“It just means so much to me because being part of a team that could do this two years in a row is just phenomenal,” said Beucler. “I’m really proud of us.”
Added Berrow, “I just think doing this for the second time, it has only been done twice, just shows how hard our team works and how close we are.”
The Mentor Girls Track and Field Team will compete in the OHSAA Track and Field State Championships on June 2 and June 3 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the campus of Ohio State University.”
