Dustin Johnson entered Sunday’s final round of the TOUR Championship tied with Kevin Chappell at 8-under par; along with the lead in the FedEx Cup standings. Jason Day would withdraw from the tournament due to back issues.
Rory McIlroy would enter the final round only 2 strokes off the lead and ranked 6th in the Cup standings.
Johnson still has a great opportunity to win the $10 million bonus for winning the FedEx Cup. He only has to win or finish second alone in the TOUR Championship to win the Cup.
McIlroy would have to win the TOUR Championship and have Johnson finish in a two-way tie for second.
But the drama would come in the final moments of the tournament. McIlry would end up in a three-way tie for first with Ryan Moore, and Kevin Chappell. After going eagle, par, birdie for his final three holes in regulation, McIlroy would have the momentum he needed to sneak into the playoff. This would be quite the impressive feat seeing as how his first two rounds were “less than stellar”.
It would take 4 playoff holes for McIlroy to shake Ryan Moore and only one playoff hole for Chappell to fall out of contention as the other two battled for first. McIlroy would score a birdie while Moore would record a par on number 16 to take the TOUR Championship and be named your FedEx Cup Champion of 2016.
The final scores for the Cup would end as such; 1. Rory McIlroy (3,120), 2. Dustin Johnson (2,380), 3. Patrick Reed (1,986), 4. Adam Scott (1,930), and 5. Paul Casey (1,880)
