Alright, first thing….this is the best card of the year so far, hands down.
Now that that’s out of the way, what a wacky decision at the end of McGregor-Diaz. Conor McGregor beat Nate Diaz in a five-round classic which I saw going in favor of Diaz. Diaz landed a lot of significant strikes and absolutely controlled the octagon for most of the bout. Hell, he even landed a takedown at the end of the fifth and final round. At the end of the bout, I scored the bout at 48-47 Diaz.
The judges didn’t see the bout as I did however, and scored the contest 48-47,47-47 and 48-47 with a majority decision win for “The Notorious” one. You can see the judges’ score card right here.
That might not be it for the two locking horns however. Conor and Nate both expressed interest in a third and final bout, this time on Conor’s terms at 155 pounds.
Let’s solve this dilemma. Nate is the fourth-ranked lightweight contender. Conor McGregor is in contention for the best pound-for-pound fighter. Let’s take these guys and put them in an octagon and make it for the right to face Eddie Alvarez for the belt.
Problem with that. Conor is the Featherweight Champion and is due to face Jose Aldo for the UFC Featherweight Championship. When will that happen? The true question is will that fight happen? Conor was just quoted on wanting to fight at 155 pounds, so would he truly say goodbye to the featherweight division and embark on the lightweight division? If I was to choose, I’d say all hands on deck for McGregor-Diaz 3 at 155 pounds, winner gets Alvarez.
Other fighters did fight on this card, as a few really caught my eye.
Cody Garbrandt– Garbrandt is finishing opponents off at will. He is 10-0 and has so much going for him. Dominick Cruz, where ya at?
Anthony Johnson– Ladies and Gentlemen, let’s get ready to “Rumble”! We did on Saturday, as Anthony Johnson made quick work of Glover Teixeira to stake his claim for the Light Heavyweight Title against Daniel Cormier.
Donald Cerrone– Donald Cerrone is a terrific welterweight and fights so much better at 170 pounds. Rick Story found that out Saturday and so will his next opponent. “Cowboy” is refreshed and is ready to come for the title.
What a night. Cleveland, it’s our turn to be impressed.
