The Mayfield Wildcats (9-11-0) defeated the Lakewood Rangers (13-15-0) on Wednesday, earning a 2-1 come-from-behind victory in Baron Cup III.
Freshman Jonas Hupcey put the Rangers on the board early, netting a slapshot goal 2:08 into the first period.
Neither side could strike for the rest of the frame.
While Lakewood was in control for the first period, the second was another story altogether.
Mayfield regrouped during the intermission and after nearly seven minutes of hockey, sophomore Danny Popov netted the equalizer to even the game at one.
That goal seemed to get the Wildcats rolling, as junior Ethan Macula scored on a power play less than two minutes later, giving Mayfield its first lead of the night.
Lakewood’s offense could not get going in the third period and with just over a minute to play, both sides lost players due to unsportsmanlike conduct, making it 4-on-4 hockey for the final minute.
Lakewood pulled its goaltender with 30 seconds to go, but it was to no avail, as the Wildcats held on to advance to the Baron Cup III semifinal.
Mayfield goaltender Ripley Crosby made 28 saves in the win.
The Wildcats advance to take on #4 CVCA on Saturday at 1 pm.
