Aurora – The Mayfield Wildcats won the OHSAA sectional title on Thursday when they came from behind to defeat the Aurora Greenmen, 2-1.
Trailing 1-0 heading into the top of the sixth, the Wildcats tied the game when Greyson Rose drove in Austin Ziance with a single to center field.
Rose talked about his approach at the plate as he got the clutch hit to tie the game.
“You just can’t think your going to get out when your up at the plate in that type of situation,” said Rose. “I knew I was in a big position. I knew I needed to do something to help my team. The first pitch, it was a little low, but I got my bat down, saw it go over the shortstops head and our runner Austin Ziance scored.”
After Nick Sperling pitched a scoreless bottom of the 6th, the Wildcats took the lead in the top of the seventh when Holden Cope lined a single to right field to score Christoph Alexander.
“I had all the confidence in the world that my teammates would get on base,” said Cope. “Before I went up to bat coach said I’d rather have nobody (else) up to bat to do this right now. First two pitches came, I didn’t like them. I knew I had to work the count to get the pitch that I liked. Fouled a few off, and then finally got to see the one that I wanted. My approach from the start was hit it right side. Saw an outside slider and went with it.”
Nick Sperling pitched a scoreless seventh as Mayfield defeated Aurora, 2-1. Sperling talked about pitching the final inning and leading his team to victory.
“I knew I had to come out there and do a job and finish it off and trust my fielders,” said Sperling. “Went in, pitched to contact, let them hit it, and finished it off.”
For the game, Sperling pitched amazing as he threw a complete game and only allowed run one on two hits, while striking out four.
Mayfield will now play Hudson on Tuesday afternoon in the OHSAA district semifinal at Euclid High School.
