Here’s three quick options:
1. Daniel Bryan – It would be tricky on the part of the WWE to allow this, but would be a HUGE hit with the fans to finally see the creator of the ‘Yes’ movement win the big event and go on to Mania. Two years ago and last year Bryan was basically an afterthought for the Rumble, and the company had to scramble two years back to get him in the main event against Batista and then champ Randy Orton. The company has given Bryan two major pushes, and sadly Bryan hasn’t been able to deliver as both with the WWE Title and IC belt he’s gotten injured. Risky choice.
2. Roman Reigns – From the reaction by the fans in Atlanta on Sunday, I don’t see how they go this route again, though one would think that Reigns deserves a true shot to carry the belt. Could they pull the plug on Sheamus early and allow Reigns to win the belt at the TLC PPV next month? Possibly. Otherwise, maybe they will again have Reigns win the Rumble, and then rematch with someone at Maina for the belt, which this time he actually win. The way things went on Sunday I would say no, but not every crowd is as negative on Roman as the Atlanta crowd was.
3. Brock Lesnar – This was the easy and early choice back a few months back with Seth as the champion, but now with the wrench thrown in, it’s anyone’s game. Lesnar is still a monster attraction, and he’ll have a big part in Mania, but who he takes on and if anything is on the line is the big question. It sounds like the proposed Brock vs Rock match is off, which means Lesnar doesn’t have an opponent right now. Undertaker and John Cena are out of the question, and a rematch for the belt with Reigns as the champ and Brock as the challenger is one possible option. Look for Lesnar to be in a main event of some sort, but who against is very up in the air.
In the end, it’s anyone’s guess as to the true direction the WWE will go after tonight. Thinking that Sheamus will keep the belt for more than a few months is unlikely as selling him as a draw for 100,000 seats at WrestleMania is hard to believe.
Look for a short run, and by the Rumble the true storylines to be set in stone for the biggest show of the year.
