ROCKY RIVER, OH –
The OHSAA Playoffs got underway on Friday night. A Division 3 Region 10 matchup featured the Lutheran West Longhorns and the Scott High School Bulldogs. Lutheran West finished the regular season 9-1 and locked down the 8 seed. Meanwhile, Scott High School, from Toledo, finished 8-2 to secure the 9 seed. Scott traveled to Lutheran West to take on the Longhorns which was set to be a good matchup.
Lutheran West Pounds the Rock
All season long, Lutheran West relied heavily on their run game. Doing so led them to a 9-1 record in the regular season. So, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The Longhorns racked up 214 rushing yards for the game. The attack was led by Senior running back Lamar Scott. Scott rushed for 104 yards on 16 attempts. One of his runs was a 56-yard touchdown run. Senior QB Clay Noble added 48 rushing yards on 13 attempts. Noble had 2 rushing touchdowns himself. The Longhorn rushing attack was a problem for Scott defenders all night long.
Lutheran West Defense Stifles Scott
Early in the game, it looked like the Scott Bulldogs were going to get into an offensive groove. On their first possession, they were marching down the field before their drive stalled. Junior running back Arnon Haynes was picking up chunk runs left and right. However, the Lutheran West defense continued to pick themselves up. In the 2nd quarter, Junior Jayden Theodore blocked Scott punt that setup the Longhorns in great field position. Later in the quarter, Sophomore JaMarrion Banks picked off Scott off a tipped pass. Throughout the game, the Lutheran West defense proved too much to handle. The Bulldogs were held to just 51 passing yards in the game. Haynes was the only bright spot for Scott. On 20 attempts, he picked up 110 rushing yards.
History for Lutheran West
After tying the regular season record with 9 wins, Lutheran West came into tonight without a playoff win in their program’s history. Despite having gone to the playoffs many times in the past years, there has yet to be a team to advance past the first round. Then on Friday night in front of a huge crowd, the Longhorns made history. They made easy work of Scott to secure a 31-0 win over the Bulldogs. This roster is built with guys from senior captains like Richard Lueke, who has multiple D1 offers for college. To guys like JaMarrion Banks and DQ Bradley who are standout sophomores. Every guy on the field seems to fit perfectly in their role. The future of this Lutheran West program will be in good hands for years to come.
Round 2
Next week, the Lutheran West Longhorns will look to upset the number 1 ranked Holy Name Green Wave. Holy Name knocked off Copley 49-13 in the opening round of the playoffs on Friday night. They finished their regular season with a 7-2 record. Both teams will look to continue their winning ways in a #1 vs #8 seed matchup next Friday night.
