Kirtland – The Lutheran West Girls Soccer team traveled to Kirtland on Thursday afternoon to take on the Kirtland Hornets.
The Longhorns of Lutheran West scored first on a goal by freshman Teagan Sheehe-Beni to make the score 1-0.
The Hornets then answered with a goal later in the first half by senior Lily Hocevar to tie the score at one.
Lutheran West Head Coach Spencer Schultz talked about the play of the Longhorns during the first half. In addition coach Schultz discussed his halftime speech and the importance of teaching and helping his team stay positive against a very difficult opponent.
“For the most part in the first half, we let them play in front of us and we made a couple of adjustments because we realized they were sending those long balls into the corner every time looking to put the crosses in,” said Coach Schultz. “We made an adjustment. But all credit to them, they made some adjustments as well and they were able to find that goal in the second half that was able to push them over (to victory).”
In addition coach Schultz talked about his coaching style.
“With my coaching style, I love to make it player focused,” said Coach Shultz. “I think it is very important to have the players involved in not only their development but making sure they’re comprehending what we’re trying to get across as coaches. If we’re not checking for comprehension then we never really know if they know what we’re talking about.”
In the second half of the contest, the game was a defensive battle with both teams having difficulty getting a good shot on goal from the final third of the pitch.
Kirtland was, however, able to get a few shots on goal in the final third.
Kirtland standout Kennedy Boyd made a great athletic one-on-one move and was able to find the back of the net to give Kirtland a 2-1 lead with a little more than 30 minutes left in the game.
Neither team scored the rest of the game.
Both Kirtland and Lutheran West are back on the pitch on Tuesday as the Hornets face Chardon and the Longhorns take on Independence.
