Cleveland- The Guardians came up with a 7-4 victory over the Marlins on Sunday. Avoiding the sweep, Cleveland tallied a season-high six extra-base hits. Logan Allen made his major league debut and earned the win.
Allen, the 25-year old, was exceptional on the hill. His only mistake came in the third inning when he gave up a home run to Jon Berti. That didn’t rattle the lefty as he struck out the next batter, Garrett Cooper, to end the inning.
The rookie became just the third pitcher in franchise history to throw six or more innings, recording eight or more strikeouts while holding the opponent to one (or zero) runs in their MLB debut. Allen joins Triston McKenzie (2020) and Luis Tiant (1964) as the other two hurlers accomplishing this feat. The eight batters fanned are also the most by any Guardians pitcher this season.
After the game the 25-year old spoke with a smile about how his teammates helped him settle in:
“Having so many guys that I’ve played with before in this dugout and in this clubhouse being very encouraging, talking to some of the other starters…[they] were encouraging about me going out there and doing my thing…so just going out there and being Logan Allen…so I was allowed to do that today.”
The offense providing support was a welcome sight. During a three-run rally in the third, Jose Ramirez and Josh Bell hit back-to-back homers. This being the first occasion this season Guardians batters have went yard back-to-back.
Bell fell one triple shy of hitting for the cycle in Sunday’s contest. The switch-hitter is 15 for his last 41 (.366) with 8 doubles, 2 home runs and 8 RBI. Bell has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games, slashing .366/.422/.707 during that stretch.
Rounding out the offense was Amed Rosario. The shortstop was 4-5 posting his 17th career four-hit game. Rosario’s triple in the third inning is his 33rd (that’s a lot of 3’s!) and is the most in MLB since the start of 2018. He also swiped his fourth bag this season.
Logan Allen may be a staple in the rotation after his exceptional start today. Due to McKenzie and Civale being on the injured list that would be one less worry.
Monday the Guardians host the Rockies with first pitch at 6:10.
