On July 11, 2014, Cleveland, Ohio was overwhelmed with one of the greatest moments in the city’s sports history. In news that came out of nowhere, LeBron James announced his free agency plans to rejoin the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The news was announced through Sports Illustrated’s Lee Jenkins and swept through every sports media outlet, including Cleveland. It was something that was murmured for his Miami tenure, but never really thought of as a real possibility by most. For years, Clevelanders were holding out hope for his return.
Check out this video of ESPN 850’s reaction three years ago for a flashback to that warm summer day, as they were reacting just like most of us.
When he came back, James promised to bring the city a championship. And amidst all of the crazy trade rumors, coaching changes, freak injuries and even a 3-1 Finals deficit, the King delivered.
A lot of people are concerned about the Cavaliers’ future as of late, but think about the territory we have embarked with LeBron in his second tenure. The team is looking to make their fourth straight NBA Finals, something that has never happened in Cavaliers’ history and rarely happens in NBA history. Also, the amount of publicity and draw the city of Cleveland has received is tremendous. Things could be completely different if Number 23 never came home.
Where were you when LeBron James came home to Cleveland, Ohio?
