The Cavaliers kicked off their six-game road trip in Washington D.C. on Wednesday night, beating the Wizards 121-115.
It was a battle of two All-Star point guards, Kyrie Irving and John Wall, and Irving showed his case to be the starting guard for the Eastern Conference at the 2016 All-Star Game in Toronto.
Irving scored 32 points, 19 of which came in the fourth quarter. This came just two days after he led the Cavs with 25 points against Toronto and their All-Star candidate point guard, Kyle Lowry.
It wasn’t all Kyrie, though. He received some help from his friends, including a game-high 34 points from LeBron James, and 25 from J.R. Smith.
Smith has now knocked down 13 three-pointers in the last two games, hitting five against the Wizards. It is no coincidence that his sharp-shooting and scoring outbursts come right after Irving is back playing unrestricted. Smith is in a much better position to succeed when he is the fourth scoring option instead of second or third like he was in the postseason and much of this regular season.
Wall got off to a rough start, but finished the night with 20 points and 12 assists.
The Cavs have now won five straight and improved to 24-9 on the season. Their next stop on the road trip is Minnesota on Friday night.
