Lake County Captains Win a Wild One – Score Winning Run on Throwing Error in 13th Inning

While it was storming here in Northeast Ohio with severe weather, the Lake County Captains were in Wisconsin playing baseball.

And a lot of baseball was played. 13 innings to be exact.

At the end of the 13 innings the Captains defeated the Sky Carps, 9-8.

The game started with Captains scoring three runs in the first inning. The Captains scored first on a wild pitch and then Joe Lampe drove in two runs with a single.

The Captains led 3-0 until the bottom of the fifth when Beloit scored four runs to take a 4-3 lead.

Beloit scored an additional run in the sixth inning to go up 5-3.

The Captains trailing 5-3 in the top of the 9th got within one run when Guardians 12th ranked prospect Jake Fox doubled to drive in a run and make the score 5-4.

The Captains then forced extra innings when they scored their fifth run on a wild pitch, yet again.

In the top of the 10th it looked like the Captains might end the contest as Guardians sixteenth ranked prospect Khalil Watson singled to give the Captains a 6-5 lead.

The Captains, however, did not hold serve as Beloit tied the game again at 6-6 in the bottom of the 10th.

In the top of the 12th, it looked like again the Captains would end the game as they scored two runs to take an 8-6 lead.  The Captains scored twice when Jake Fox and Yordys Valdes both drove in a run with a single.

But the Sky Carps did not quit. They evened up the contest by scoring two runs of their own in the bottom of the 12th to tie the score at 8-8.

The Captains took the lead for good in top of the 13th Inning when the Sky Carps shortstop threw the ball away allowing Joe Lampe to score.

Sergio Morillo earned the victory for the Captains as he pitched two innings in relief.

Leading the Captains at the plate were Kahlil Watson (3-5), John Ingle (2-4) and Jake Fox (2-6).

With the victory, the Captains have now won three in a row and are 11-3 in their past fourteen games.

With the excellent baseball the  Captains have been playing, their second half record has improved to 26-23. Currently, the Captains are only 2.5 games out of first place.

The Captains return to the diamond tonight in Beloit when they face the Sky Carps for the fourth game of the six game series. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:35 EST.
