The Lake County Captains, after finishing with the Midwest League’s best overall record this season (77-43), are two wins away from hoisting the championship trophy.
They’re also just one loss away from their season coming to an end and watching the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers celebrate winning it all.
The two teams will play game 2 of this best-of-three Championship Series tonight at Classic Auto Group Park in Lake County.
The Captains will look to extend the series at home after a tough game one that saw the Timber Rattlers escape with a 5-4 victory at their place.
Lake County raced out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning before Wisconsin came right back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first.
With the game tied 4-4 in the eighth, number 58 prospect (mlb.com) Cooper Pratt doubled home what became the game-winning run for the Timber Rattlers.
The Captains will send out left-hander Matthew Wilkerson, one of the most dominant pitchers in single-A this season.
Wilkerson, a 2023 10th-round pick, is 8-6 with a sterling 1.90 ERA through 118.2. He has 174 strikeouts and carries a 0.91 whip.
Opposing him for the Timber Rattlers will be Alexander Corielle. The right-hander is 6-5 through 104.1 innings this season.
He has 98 strikeouts with a 4.49 ERA and a 1.22 Whip.
The two teams seemed destined to meet in the championship after the first half of the season saw Lake County go 41-25 and Wisconsin 42-24.
Up-and-down second halves brought both teams closer to the pack but they still finished with the League’s top two record before sweeping their division-series match-ups.
Like game one, each of the four first round games were decided by just one run.
Tonight’s game is scheduled for a 6:35 first pitch.
