Eastlake – The Lake County Captains took three out of four games over the weekend against the West Michigan Whitecaps at Classic Park.
On Friday, the Captains defeated the Whitecaps 9-8, and then won the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday, 5-3.
After a 7-0 loss in the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday, the Captains finished the weekend strong with a 5-0 victory on Sunday afternoon.
Reid Johnston, a former North Carolina State Wolfpack baseball player from Enfield, North Carolina and Rocky Mountain Academy, threw 5.2 innings of scoreless baseball to pick up the victory for the Captains on Sunday.
Pitching the final 3.1 innings for the Captains on Sunday was Trenton Denholm from the University of California Irvine and Oak Ridge High School.
In picking up the save, Denholm scattered four hits and struck out three.
Offensively on Sunday, the Captains got on board in the fourth inning on Milan Tolentino’s (Guardians 20th ranked prospect) solo home run.
The Captains added a run in the 6th, on Justin Boyd’s (Guardians 26th ranked top prospect, from Legend High School and Oregon State University) sacrifice fly scoring Jake Fox (Guardians 8th ranked prospect from Lakeland Christian High School), from third base.
The Captains added three runs in the eighth inning on Sunday to make the final score 5-0, and improve to 29-33 on the season.
For the weekend, the Captains plated 19 runs which included a nine run, 14 hit game on Friday night.
Friday night’s 9-8 victory was a wild one with the Whitecaps manager getting ejected in the top of the 9th and exiting the field by walking through the stands.
With the Captains trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth on Friday, Justin Boyd singled to right field to drive in Milan Tolentino to tie the score at 4-4 and force extra innings.
The Whitecaps came back with four runs in the top of the 10th to seemingly put an end to the Captains comeback attempt.
But the Captains were resilient and did not quit.
They scored five runs in the bottom of the 10th on Friday night to defeat the Whitecaps 9-8.
Just as Boyd got the game-tying hit in the bottom of the 9th, he also delivered the walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th to give the Captains the victory.
Offensively on Friday night, the Captains were led by Tolentino (3-5), Fox (3-6, with 2 doubles), Boyd (2-5) and Christian Cairo (2-5, with a home run).
In Saturday night’s 5-0 victory, the Captains were led offensively by Dayan Frias (2-2, home run), Micael Ramirez (1-2, home run), and Jorge Boros (1-3, home run).
The Captains return to the diamond on Tuesday as they travel south to take on the Dayton Dragons for a six-game road trip.
The Captains then return to Classic Park on June 28 as they take on the Fort Wayne TinCaps.
