After the Hawken Flag Football team took a 14-8 lead into halftime, the Hawks quickly scored again at the start of the second half to take a 22-8 lead. However, Mentor came right back with a touchdown of their own to tighten up the game at 22-15.
With Mentor driving and looking to tie the game up late in the second half, Lizzie Kent stepped in front of the Mentor receiver at the goal line for a clutch interception.
“Lizzie Kent, she’s a great defender for us,” said Hawken Head Flag Football Coach Devin Hernandez. “Even if you know she is a little bit away from the receiver, that receiver is not as open as she might seem. She has had a lot of picks for us all year. She’s a clutch player. At big-time moments, she’s there.”
Coach Hernandez emphasized how crucial Kent’s interception was.
“In the end zone, Lizzie Kent, if she doesn’t make that play, they catch it, they tie up the score, who knows what happens in this game.”
After the interception, Hawken scored two more touchdowns to make the final score, 36-15.
Leading Hawken with 2 touchdowns each for the game were seniors Kate Bollinger and Carmen Cicerini.
Hawken now advances to tomorrow’s quarterfinals of the Northeast Ohio High School Flag Football Championships where they will face Berkshire at Mentor High School.
