What The Jimmy Garoppolo To The 49ers Trade Means For The Browns’ Future

According to Adam Schefter from ESPN.com, the San Francisco 49ers have acquired New England Patriots back-up quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. The Patriots acquire a 2018 second-round pick from the 49ers. Quarterback Brian Hoyer was released by the 49ers. The former Cleveland Browns quarterback is expected to have interest from the Patriots. Hoyer previously played with the Patriots from 2009 to 2011. Both quarterbacks have been back-ups for quarterback Tom Brady.

Jimmy Garoppolo was originally a second-round pick of the New England Patriots in 2014. In his career, Garoppolo has played in 17 games., throwing 5 touchdowns and 0 interceptions with a completion percentage of 67.0. The 25-year-old went to Eastern Illinois and is in his fourth year in the NFL. Garoppolo will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season but he is expected re-sign with the 49ers.

What does this mean for the Cleveland Browns future?

The Browns are famous for missing out on quarterbacks. For example, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz, Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. It won’t take very long to figure out if the Browns have truly missed out on Jimmy Garoppolo. As of now, most fans already believe that is the case. The Browns had interest in Garoppolo. During the draft, the Browns offered at least a second-round pick and more for Garoppolo according to Ian Rapoport from NFL Network.

The reality is, the Cleveland Browns continue to miss out on potential franchise-changing opportunities. The pressure continues to mount more and more on the Browns front office.

The Browns will still have an opportunity at landing a quarterback like Kirk Cousins, who is currently the starting quarterback for the Washington Redskins but is expected to leave when he becomes a free agent at the end of the season. The Browns will also have a chance to land a top quarterback talent in this draft. Players like Josh Rosen out of UCLA, Mason Rudolph out of Oklahoma State, Baker Mayfield out of Oklahoma, Josh Allen out of Wyoming. Of course, there are more quarterbacks available, but those are some of the top prospects.

Cleveland, as of right now, would hold the number one pick for the second year in a row. This pick will most likely be used in one of three ways: Drafting running back Saquon Barkley out of Penn State, drafting a top quarterback, or trading down.

For right now, the future will continue to be rather blurry for the Browns. With the Trade Deadline on Tuesday at 4 pm, The Browns will continue to try to upgrade their weakness in hopes of improving from a 1-15 season. The Browns are currently 0-8 and have a bye week.
