Indians team President Chris Antonetti announced today in Detroit that Jefry Rodriguez will start for the Tribe Saturday in a spot start against the Royals.
Rodriguez was involved a trade that sent catcher Yan Gomes to the Washington Nationals. Rodriguez spent some time with the Nationals last year in the majors. He went 3-3 with a 5.71 ERA.
Rodriguez is 6-6, 232 lbs. right handed thrower. He started the season in Triple-A for the Tribe. He’s had one start where he went 5.2/3 innings pitched. He won the game but had an ERA of 4.76.
He gave up a home run and 3 earned runs on 7 hits.
Rodriguez will likely be sent back to AAA Columbus after the spot start. The Indians will go through their options after Saturday as what they want to do with the rotation while starting pitcher Mike Clevinger is out with a back injury.
The Indians view Rodriguez as a long-term project. Rodriguez will more than likely be better suited for the bullpen. It may allow him an easier path to stay in the majors with the team.
