On Friday afternoon, the Nordonia Knights took on the Shaker Raiders. In an effort to beat the rain, the starting time for the game was moved up a half hour.
Shortly after the completion of the first inning, which saw Nordonia take a 1-0 lead, mother nature did not cooperate. Hail and rain then came down for about 20 minutes. But after a 45-minute delay, the game resumed.
Nordonia picked up where they left off and defeated Shaker, 9-0 in a rain shortened 6 inning affair. With the victory, Nordonia moves to 8-6 on the season.
Nordonia was led by Ben Chesser who pitched 5 innings of shutout baseball. Evan Leitner through a scoreless sixth inning for the Knights.
For the game, Chesser only gave up three hits and had 4 strikeouts. Chesser has pitched great this season as he is now 3-1 with a 1.97 ERA.
“I tried not to let the weather affect me today, (tried to) just throw strikes and compete out here,” said Chesser. “I threw a lot of fastballs today, curveball was alright.”
In addition to Chesser’s excellent performance on the mound, Nordonia was led offensively by Matt Janosek who was 3-4 at the plate with an RBI.
“I just had to stay back in the box, the pitcher was throwing kind of slow,” said Janosek. “(I had to) wait on the ball and try to hit it back fast, that’s what I was trying to do. I wasn’t trying to do anything special; I was just trying to hit a nice single and put it in play.”
Other Nordonia Knights contributing to the offensive production included Alex Canupp (2-3, RBI), Jonathan Mitchner (1-1, 2 RBI)
Kyan Freyhauf (1-2, RBI), Vinny Hack (1-2, 3 RBI), Michael Ebert (1-3), Dash Lanzilotta (1-2, 2 RBI).
As a team, the Knights collected ten hits for the game as they scored a run in both the first and second innings, 5 runs in the third, and 2 runs in the fourth.
Nordonia returns to the diamond Saturday morning to face Padua Franciscan, weather permitting.
