3. The Cavs alooking towards 2019 and beyond
In the NBA it’s hard for teams like Cleveland to attract free agents, especially now that LeBron’s gone. Therefore they need to explore trades and that’s where 2019 comes into play. After this season the contracts of JR Smith, Tristian Thompson and George Hill become very attractive because they expire after the 2019 season.
The Cavs may be able to move one of those contracts with another player and/or pick for an unsatisfied super-star in the summer of 2019. Even if they aren’t able to execute a trade the Cavs are still in a good situation. Hill is slated to make $18 million in 2019 but only one million is guaranteed. Smith is on the books for $15.6 million but on $3.8 million of that is guaranteed.
Add in Tristian Thompson’s $18.5 million coming off the books and the Cavs will be going into 2020 with a ton of cap space and could be closer to competing again then we previously believed.
