NEW YORK– Cavaliers point guard Isaiah Thomas has been fined $20,000 by the league for striking Minnesota Timberwolves forward Andrew Wiggins above the shoulders in Monday night’s game.
Kiki VanDeWeghe, the league’s executive vice president for basketball operations announced the fine via press release.
Thomas was ejected for the incident with 6:47 remaining in the third quarter. As Wiggins attempted to drive into the lane, Thomas’s tried to stop the easy bucket but hit him in the throat.

“I’ve gotten numerous steals like that, going out like that,” Thomas said after the game. “It just happened I hit him in the throat. I apologized right away because I didn’t mean to do that. I’m just glad he’s all right.
“I was surprised because I went for the ball. But I know anything around the head is really … especially if it looks bad, you’re going to probably be thrown out. I just made sure he was good, made sure he knew I had no intention of trying to hurt him or hit him in the throat.”
The Cavs suffered the worst loss of the season as they fell 127-99 to the Timberwolves, and are back in action tomorrow night against the Toronto Raptors.
