The Indians roster needed a shakeup on Saturday, as the team needed to get pitcher Jefry Rodriguez on the roster for tonight’s start against the Royals.
The team sent relief pitcher Jon Edwards as well as outfielder Jordan Luplow to Triple-A Columbus, calling up Rodriguez as well as pitcher Cody Anderson.
Luplow has struggled in his first go-around with the Indians, going 3-for-15 (.200) with no homers and no runs batted in, and he’s struck out in eight of his 15 plate appearances.
The team acquired Luplow and Max Moroff from the Pirates back in mid-November for infielder Erik Gonzalez.
Last season for he Pirates, Luplow hit .185 in 37 games, with three homers and 17 RBI.
Edwards pitched last night in the loss to the Royals (one of seven pitchers used) and this season went 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA (5.0IP, 4H, 1R-ER, 1HR, 5BB, 3SO) across six relief appearances
Anderson has not pitched in a Major League game since September of 2016, and has spent the previous two seasons rehabbing from a pair of right-elbow surgeries performed in November of 2016.
Rodríguez made one start for AAA Columbus this year, notching the win against Indianapolis on April 6th while working into the sixth inning (5.2IP, 7H, 3R/ER, 0BB, 4SO, 91P).
He was acquired this past offseason from the Washington Nationals in the deal that sent Yan Gomes to the Nats.
