CLEVELAND – The Indians just got reliever Andrew Miller back from the disabled list on Friday, but now may have to live without him again after he left Monday’s game against the Boston Red Sox with an apparent injury.
Miller walked off the field dejected after throwing just seven pitches to start the seventh inning, only two of which were strikes.
He walked off in disgust after throwing a ball to Red Sox outfielder Andrew Benintendi.
The two-time All-Star met Indians manager Terry Francona by the third base line, and quickly made his way into the dugout and then clubhouse as Francona spoke to the umpire and made a pitching change to Dan Otero with the Indians trailing 4-3.
The reliever did pitch on Friday, the day he came off the DL, and went 0.2 innings with a walk and a strikeout.
Francona said on Friday that the pitcher was good to go but that the team would be careful with how much they eased him back into the swing of being out of the mound.
“All good, and we’ll be prudent,” Francona said Friday. “We’re not going to run him into the ground here, but it’s nice to have him back. With [Tyler] Olson here, we can balance it a little bit.”
This season Miller is 4-3 with a 1.65 ERA in 48 appearances.
UPDATE (10:14pm) – The Indians announced in the bottom of the 8th that Miller exited the game after he re aggravated tendonitis in his knee.
The team also announced Carlos Santana left the game with lower back tightness.
