CLEVELAND– The Cleveland Indians called up Francisco Mejia from Class Triple-A Columbus prior to Saturday’s game against the New York Yankees.
Mejia will be in the lineup, batting sixth as the designated hitter. With the Clippers, he’s currently batting .279 (83-for-297) with 21 doubles, one triple, seven home runs and 43 RBI in 77 games. Mejia was slated to appear in the All-Star Futures Game on Sunday in D.C. but will no longer participate.
To make room for Mejia on the roster, the team has optioned starting pitcher Shane Bieber to Columbus. This is a move that is mainly to keep Bieber on his schedule– if he were to remain on the big league roster he would have 10 days off between starts.
Through seven starts for the Indians, Bieber has a 5-1 record and a 3.53 ERA. He’s amassed 42 strikeouts, and has shown good command, something that numerous visiting teams have remarked about when discussing having to go against him.
