Indians Manager Terry Francona on the Decision Behind Placing Josh Tomlin on the DL

CLEVELAND – As reported earlier, Indians reliever Josh Tomlin Tuesday was placed on the 10-day disabled list and calling starter Adam Plutko from Triple-A Columbus.

It appears Tomlin strained his hamstring in one of his three appearances between this past Saturday to last night where he gave up a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning in the 7-5 loss.

“Josh told me his hamstring was bothering him; manager Terry Francona said. “By watching him, I knew something was bothering him and It was getting in the way so we decided to put him on the DL. Going to give him a couple of days and see what best for him but working together.”

Tomlin currently is 0-5 of the year with a 6.98 ERA. Also, hitters are hitting .300 (63-210) and have hit 21 home runs against him.

The plan for the Tribe is to have Plutko come out of the bullpen for now, he was scheduled to start in Columbus for the Clippers tomorrow.

“He’s stretched out and he can give us a couple of innings if necessary; Francona said. “Trying to protect the bullpen but we valued enough what he is doing as a starter but this is not a long term.”

This will be Plutko’s fourth stint with the Indians this season, where he has compiled a 4-2 record with a 4.66 earned run average in seven games, including six starts with Cleveland.

Plutko has allowed 19 earned runs and 35 hits against 25 strikeouts over 36.2 innings of work.
