Thanks to an overtime goal by senior Henry Thomas, the University School Preppers are heading to Columbus following an exciting 2-1 win over Gilmour Academy in the district final at the Kent State Ice Arena Friday evening.
It was the first goal of the year for Thomas, and it couldn’t have come at a bigger or better moment for the Preppers, who held a 1-0 lead into the third and rallied after Gilmour scored a short-handed goal to tie the game to send it to overtime.
The winning goal came just 1:28 into the extra period, and sends the Preppers on Columbus to play Saturday’s winner of the matchup between Dublin Jerome and Olentangy Liberty.
University School’s game in the state’s capital will take place on Friday, March 8th at Nationwide Arena.
Holding a 1-0 lead into the third, Gilmour tied it up on a goal by Evan Enrich with 13:45 left in the period.
The Preppers first goal of the contest came from George Brinn with 3:25 left in the first period.
The game stayed tight the rest of the way until Gilmour tied it and Thomas won it with the thrilling goal in the overtime period.
University School goalie Critter Coughlin earned the win in net, allowing just the single Gilmour goal.
