HS Football: Euclid Hangs On to Top Medina in Wild 31-28 Win

A game that went back and forth the entire night, came down to a 44-yard field goal with :02 left in regulation to send the Medina Bees into overtime with the Euclid Panthers.

The kick by kicker Ryan Miller went just wide of the left goal post to seal the game for the Panthers in their 31-28 win.

“(Miller) had a great chance, he almost made it,” Panthers wide receiver Armond Scott said.

Depending on the perspective, one may argue that the kick was good, but witnesses in the stands of that end zone claim the kick was just wide left.

Leading up to the end of this classic, was six lead changes that came from all three phases of the game.

Jajuan Jackson of Medina (2-3, 2-3 in GCC), returned the opening kickoff over 85 yards to give the Bees a 7-0, and marking the third straight game the Panthers (3-2, 2-2) conceded a touchdown on special teams.

After Euclid’s offense punted on their first drive, and Medina was driving down the field, Panthers’ Senior Rasheed Evans picked up a Medina fumble and took it 87 yards to tie the score at 7-7.

“That (defensive touchdown) was huge for us,” Panthers’ coach Jeff Rotsky said after the win.

“Big time players stepped up for us and made some big plays today.”

“When (Medina’s special teams touchdown) happened, the (Panthers’) sideline was a little down, simply because this shouldn’t have happened..,” Scott said.

“Evans got that (touchdown) and everybody is going crazy. We got back to where we are supposed to be.”

Leading the Panthers on offense was wide receiver Armond Scott, who ended up crossing the pylon for all three of their touchdowns.

“I couldn’t play last week, so I had a chip on my shoulder this week,” Scott said.

“I had to do what I had to do this week for my team.”

Scott accumulated and astounding six catches, 203 receiving yards, with three touchdowns.

Medina tried to throw it deep early. The results were a mixed bag.

Passes ranged from incomplete, to completed, and even some drawn defensive penalties on Euclid.

One of the players that did make some of the completions work was wide receiver Luke Hensley who caught three balls for 74 yards and two touchdowns.

One of those touchdowns came in the third quarter with a 48-yard Drew Allar bomb to the end zone. The defender was called for pass interference, but Hensley still managed to hang onto the ball to give Medina a 24-21 lead in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter especially, Medina, a throwing team for the most part, ran the football, effectively.

Mainly, their drive that went eight plays, 57 yards, they ran the ball seven times.

The one time they passed the ball, was a catch by Matt Rudolph was ruled downed at the 1-yard line, despite his feet planted in the end zone on a third-and-goal.

This set up a fourth and goal touchdown quarterback sneak by Allar to give the Bees the 28-24 lead mid-fourth quarter.

For both teams, a large number of penalties were called. One example was a touchdown pass that was called back in the third quarter that resulted in a punt.

Since 2015, Euclid has gone 5-1 against Medina. In every win, including this game, they have scored at least 30 points.

Next Friday, Euclid will go on the road to face Elyria and Medina will host Solon.
