Sure we saw some of the same things from Brian Hoyer a season ago, and there’s no ‘for sure’ that McCown won’t fall back into being the QB that last season in Tampa had a 70.5 QB rating with 11 touchdowns and 14 picks.
For now though, he’s playing like the vet the Browns thought they were getting when they inked him this offseason, and now at 2-3 the outlook for the team is a whole lot cheerier than it was just a week ago.
McCown was asked if this 2015 Browns success reminds him of what he did two years ago in Chicago when he was off the charts, throwing 13 touchdowns and one pick for the Bears.
“Every situation is different. Just from a system-wise, I feel just as good about the system that we have in place and what we’re doing as I did then,” McCown said.
“I think that’s the biggest thing I can say about it is I feel like when I go out on the field on Sunday, I feel like prepared, I feel like I have answers and that’s the way I felt in 2013 with the Bears.”
The question that people want to know though is can McCown keep it up?
Going off against the Chargers and Ravens, two teams that don’t look like they will be playing into January (Chargers 17th ranked defense, Ravens 25th), is one thing, but doing it against the 5-0 Broncos whose defense looks solid thus far, is another.
Denver’s defense is ranked fifth in the NFL, and has allowed less than 200 yards per game. If McCown can go off against them, then it’s hard looking ahead to see the freight train of success derailing anytime soon.
McCown, ever the pro in a win or a loss, knows the NFL is a week to week business, and that the Ravens win will be quickly forgotten if he struggles against the Broncos.
“We always say it, it is hard to win a game in the National Football League,” McCown said.
“There is a lot that goes into every week of preparation. When you do it, you have to sit back and enjoy it – there is no doubt about it. Especially in that kind of fashion, there is going to be a huge sense of accomplishment and all those things, but at the same time, we have to put that one on the shelf, move forward and get focused on Denver and have that one-game season mentality where that is all we think about and focus on.
“I know the veterans and Coach Pett will be hammering that home this week so that we come out with that mindset.”
So far McCown has proven just about everyone wrong – if he can keep it going or not is the next step to how far the Browns can go in 2015.
