It was the night before Thanksgiving, and the crowd at Licking Heights High School were treated to seeing their Lady Hornets basketball team upend the Westland Cougars 53-31. This is a new season and with that comes new hope and the Hornets have a new head coach in Evelyn Woods. Woods is a former collegiate basketball star and her experience and direction have the team looking at a bright future. With that as the backdrop, Woods started a freshman, two sophomores, a junior and a senior on this opening night.
Layla Booth was the freshman who started. Booth, the 5’10 guard/post combo player was everywhere for the Hornets on this night. She finished with 20 points on the evening. That included dropping two threes from beyond the arc. She also attacked the rim and finished going six of seven from the free throw line.
Karyn Johnson and Kendyl Hunt, the two starting sophomores were also playing lights-out defense all night and forced Westland into multiple turnovers. Johnson went for 14 points on the evening. Hunt went for five points, had several assists, and registered three steals.
What looks to make this squad even stronger as the season gets started is they also have a veteran presence about them. Junior point guard Symaya McDougall was tenacious with her defense all evening, getting at least four steals. Tori Diggs, another junior came up big coming off the bench as she dropped 10 points. None bigger was the three-pointer she nailed in the second quarter to put her team up 17-7 which really helped stretch the early lead.
All in all, the Hornets worked hard at securing win No. 1 on the season, and it looks like this squad has a fun season ahead as they play game 2 when they host Franklinton next Tuesday, November 28th.
