3. Alvarez Releases His Inner Demons- Something got into former UFC Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez Saturday night in his battle against fellow Ultimate Fighter coach Justin Gaethje. Alvarez was looking to get back to his winning ways after a no-contest against Dustin Poirier following dropping his title to Conor McGregor. He did so and more during the UFC 218 main card.
Gaethje is known for his slugging mentality, making every fight he competes in ugly and bloody. Alvarez accepted that fact and decided to throw his thought process out the window and fought freely. His act-first mentality not only helped Alvarez have success against “The Highlight”, it also helped him hand Gaethje his first defeat by way of knockout. It was impressive in itself that Alvarez defeated Gaethje, but to finish him? That was huge for “The Underground King”. Alvarez brought back the savagery that helped him stop Rafael Dos Anjos for the Lightweight Title and it reminded everyone of just how dangerous he is when he isn’t overthinking his strategy.
Though he won’t be fighting for a while after taking many lumps in this scrap, Alvarez won’t be an ideal opponent for anyone in the 155-pound division.
