Hawken’s Johnson Records 4 TD Night to Lead Hawks to Victory

Chagrin Falls, Oh. – The Hawken Hawks defeated Chagrin Falls Tigers 40-20 behind Jordon Johnsons 144 yards rushing and 4 TD’s. The Hawks improved to 6-3 in their march toward the playoffs.  Chagrin Falls fell to 3-6.

After returning the opening kickoff to their own 48, Hawken got a hue 40-yard run from Johnson to set the tone. Two plays later Johnson scored on a 4-yard run. For a while, that was the last good thing for Hawken as turnovers stalled drives. First a fumble from Johnson, then an over the head snap that Chagrin Falls recovered. But the Hawken defense for the most part held it together as they held the Tigers to only one score.

Up 7-6, Donovan Moorhead tied the school record for touchdown throws, on a 15-yard pass to freshman Charlie Mallett to put the Hawks up 14-6. On their next drive, the Hawks moved the ball to the two, and Johnson scored again. A missed PAT had Hawken up 20-6 at the half.

As Chagrin Falls received the second half kick, their drive was stopped when Johnson intercepted Jacob Kay, leading to a Luke Mangini score to put Hawken up 27-6. But the Tigers weren’t going away that easily. A nice drive, ending with a 6-yard pass from Kay to Drew Zelch drew the score to 27-13. But the Hawks responded with 2 scores from Johnson as he scored on an eight yarder, and an electrifying 65-yard run to put the game away and win comfortably 40-20.

The Hawks started slow, but picked up their intensity and imposed their will. The Hawks are a young team and there have been learning opportunities all year. The guys work hard and even when things aren’t going their way, kept plugging away and trusting the system. That’s the mark of a good team, and a team that will be dangerous come playoff time.
