NEW YORK, NY –
Game 2 was set in New York on Friday afternoon. The game was supposed to be played on Thursday night but was postponed due to inclement weather. The Guardians ace Shane Bieber took the mound looking to lead Cleveland to a key win. The Yankees brought Nestor Cortes, who could be an ace in a lot of MLB rotations, to the bump in Game 2. The Yankees were looking to take a 2-0 series lead in to Cleveland on Saturday.
Battle of the Bullpens
Despite the great starting pitcher matchup, the bullpen took on the clutch innings. Both Nestor Cortes and Shane Bieber gave up just 2 runs in their respective outings. The Cleveland bullpen was led by Trevor Stephan who struck out all 4 Yankee batters he faced. Including Aaron Judge who marked his 4th strikeout of the game. The Yankees bullpen was led by Jonathan Loaisiga who went a perfect 1.2 innings. In the end it was typical starter Jameson Taillon, who came out of the bullpen and took the loss for the Yankees.
Guardians Play Their Brand
During the regular season, the Guardians finished 29th out of 30 teams in total home runs. On Friday afternoon, most of the offense came from multi-hit innings. In the 4th inning, it was Andres Gimenez who hit a single to score Josh Naylor. His RBI single made it a 2-1 Yankee lead. In the 5th inning, despite the typical lack of power, Amed Rosario hit a solo home run to center field to tie the game up at 2. It was not until the 10th inning where Jose Ramirez blooped a double into shallow left. A throwing error by Yankee 3rd baseman Josh Donaldson allowed him to get to third with no one out. A bloop single by Oscar Gonzalez, then an RBI double by Josh Naylor gave the Guardians a 4-2 lead.
