5th Ranked Guardians top prospect Chase DeLauter went 4-5 and 7th ranked prospect Jake Fox went 3-5 Wednesday afternoon as they led the Lake County Captains to their second straight victory over the South Bend Cubs, 10-4.
The Captains got on the scoreboard first in the 3rd inning when Jake Fox singled with one out. After moving to second on a ground out, Fox scored on Chase DeLauter’s base hit.
Leading 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth, the Captains first three batters walked then Will Bartlett singled to drive in a run to make the score 2-0.
Nate Furman then extended the lead to 3-0 with a bases loaded walk.
Still, in the bottom of the 4th inning, 7th ranked Guardians top prospect Jake Fox doubled to drive in two more runs and give the Captains a 5-0 lead.
After a wild pitch led to Furman scoring, Chase DeLauter singled home Jake Fox from third base to give the Captains a 7-0 lead.
The Captains added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when Guardians 14th ranked top prospect Kahlil Watson scored on a one out base hit by Chase DeLauter.
The Captains added their final two runs of the afternoon in the eighth inning after the Cubs scored three runs in the top of the eighth.
Joe Lampe singled to drive in the Captains final two runs of the game to make the score 10-3.
The Cubs then scored one run in the top of the ninth to make the final score 10-4.
For the game the Captains had 14 base hits.
Getting the victory on the mound for the Captains was Guardians 16th ranked top prospect Parker Messick who pitched 5 scoreless innings of baseball and struck out 11 Cubs batters.
The Captains return to the diamond at 7pm on Thursday when they play their third game of a six game series at Classic Park against the South Bend Cubs.
