The debate is now over, with his win tonight over Michael Bisping for the UFC Middleweight title after a four year layoff from the sport. GSP lays claim to the greatest of all time in the history of MMA. Anyone who even tries to argue different for Anderson Spider Silva ( busted for PED’s) or Jon Bones Jones ( busted for PED’s) is foolish at this point.
GSP was already a legend with a first ballot Hall of Fame resume to begin with. Mix in the fact that he spent four years on the sidelines to come back a weight class higher and defeat Michael Bisping for the Middleweight title tonight in the third round, tells you all you need to know.
Not only did GSP win, but he looked dominant in doing so. GSP put the champ to sleep with a textbook rear naked choke after almost knocking him out seconds earlier. The ref could have and should have stopped it seconds earlier but chose not to.
GSP left the MMA world in a state of shock when he up and left the sport in November of 2013 in the midst of a 12 fight win streak. Most coming as the greatest UFC Welterweight Champion in history. Seldom have we seen a fighter come of such a long layoff, bump up a weight class to become champion, he did exactly that! The longest before him to do it was Randy Couture who took 13 months off, came back and won the UFC Heavyweight Championship after losing the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship.
The new Middleweight Champion didn’t show a single bit of ring rust tonight, using his angles and jabs to perfection. his takedowns were as precise as ever. One could only wonder had he stayed in the game the last four years, how many more names he could have beaten and wins he could have racked up.
He mentioned after the fight that his future in the 185 pound division may be short lived, but it appears for now that a title unification bout with Robert Whittaker would be on the horizon.
His looming bout with Whittaker aside, no one can take away from this moment. The win over Bisping can be added on to a long names of huge names in the sport he has beaten.
Names such as
Sean Sherk
BJ Penn (twice)
Matt Hughes (twice)
Josh Koscheck (twice)
Jake Shields
Nick Diaz
Johny Hendricks
Jon Fitch
Carlos Condit,
To name a few! He also becomes only the fourth MMA fighter of all time in UFC History to wins championships in two different weight classes. He joins BJ Penn, Randy Couture and Conor McGregor in that prestigious club.
Argument over, your greatest MMA Competitor of all time, Georges Saint Pierre!
