Shaker Hts.- In their first season in the GCC, the Cleveland Heights Tigers won the conference, going a perfect 7-0, (9-1 overall) as they defeated their rival Shaker Heights 41-31. In a game that has playoff implications, and outright bragging rights, the Tigers refused to lose as they can now officially say they have not lost to an Ohio team this regular season.
The Tigers were led by Mr. Football candidate Marquise Davis who scored 3 TD’s. one of the best RBs in the country finished off his junior year of high school in rand fashion as he scored from 10 yards, 3 yards, and 30 yards on the ground. Davis is absolutely the focal point of the offense, and it goes without saying, a big part in the Tigers being so dominate.
But the Tigers would not be the team they are without John Gordon Jr., the senior playing in his final regular season home game, put on a show as he scored in every way. In the second quarter, Gordon Jr. caught a 55-yard pass as he scored to put the Tigers up 14-10. After Shaker scored, the kickoff was all about Gordon Jr. as he returned the kickoff 75 yards for a score. To ice the game, and score the game’s final TD, there was a 58-yard run. Gordon Jr. is not the most intimidating player. The 5’ 8” 165 RB/S doesn’t look like the typical dominate football player. Yet, every single game, he shines in some way. Whether it’s interceptions, or running, or catching, or special teams, Gordon Jr will always find a way to be in the box score. Truly a remarkable finish to a high school career for the electric #0.
Shaker Heights, after starting the year 6-0, limped to the finish. After a great start, the Red Raiders finish their season 7-3 (4-3 in the GCC). A disappointing finish to the year, but still, something to build on. After giving up 70 points last week in the loss to Medina, the Red Raiders came into this game looking to play spoiler. In the end, the Tigers had an answer for everything the Red Raiders threw at them.
Both teams will wait to see who they will play in the playoffs. The Tigers will be highly ranked as they look to avenge last year’s loss where St. Ignatius came from 28 down, and the Tigers lost a heart breaker 50-49. The Tigers remember how that felt and certainly have come out this season ready to avenge that loss. And the way this team has bounced back, and won close games, and dominated the teams they were supposed to, I’d say the Tigers are on a mission to finish what they started. If Marquise Davis, and John Gordon Jr. play the way they have played all season… this could be a special season for the boys from Cedar and Lee!
