CLEVELAND – After a bounce back win against the Tampa Bay Storm (0-2), the Cleveland Gladiators (1-1) are looking to start their first winning streak of the season when they host the LA KISS at the Q tonight at 7:30pm.
With both Chris Dieker out with injury and coach Steve Thonn headed to the hospital just an hour before kickoff last week for an irregular heartbeat, Cleveland decided to go with Dennis Havrilla over Arvell Nelson due to Nelsons skills at linebacker.
Ron Selesky was on the sideline calling the plays.
The offense found a rhythm that they couldn’t find in the season opener as Havrilla threw for 5 total touchdowns. Three touchdowns by Collin Taylor and 2 more by Thyron Lewis showed that the receivers were back to their usual ways and quickly knocked the rust off and looked like the threat they once were.
Once again, the spark of the Cleveland defense was Joe Powell. He had another two interception game with one returned for a touchdown. He now was 4 interceptions in 2 games with 3 returned for touchdowns.
We now look ahead to Saturdays match up against the 1-1 LA KISS. Coming off a brutal loss against the Arizona, where they could only score 28 points, only 7 points coming in the second half.
The Gladiators did not face the LA KISS in the 2015 season, but were 2-0 against them in 2014. KISS QB Nathan Stanley has 545 passing yards, 8 touchdowns so far this season and WR Donovan Morgan racked up 13 receptions for 170 yards and touchdowns.
In Havrilla’s first start as a Gladiator he was solid with 23 completions on 34 pass attempts, 219 yards and five touchdown. His throws could be rather sloppy at times but with the first game out of the way, the nerves will be under control and make better and more accurate throws.
